Abstract

The study of Attic grave-reliefs from the Classical period can be of great interest as a source of information about the relationships between gender, age and social class in Ancient Greece. This essay analyses an epigram devoted to a deceased woman by a female friend. The use of emhetaira/em in this text has triggered some interpretations mdash;misleading, in my opinionmdash; of the two women being prostitutes.
