This double issue of the journal Matèria is published in memory of Joaquim Garriga, a strong personality whose influence helped to shape our department, who will be missed both for the results of his individual contribution and for the ability he showed in making things move and enlivening our studies in a much broader radius of action, which transcends his most personal research work. Besides the in memoriam texts there are other no less explicit dedications in the form of articles, that have been collected to make room especially for the art of the early modern period, despite the fact that at the same time they deal with aspects associated with contemporary art, which, as we well know, aroused his curiosity and interest in the same way as good cinema or good literature did.
