Unpublished letter of José Nicolás de Azara to Giambattista Bodoni in 1797: forms of neoclassical friendship in an illustrated patron’s farewell
This paper presents a brief overview of the published letters of the Spanish diplomat José Nicolás de Azara, and uncovers a handwritten missive, which adds to the most important epistolary exchange of the aforementioned ambassador and neoclassical bibliophile: the private and intellectual correspondence he maintained for almost 30 years with the renowned typographer Giambattista Bodoni. The publication of the letter in question, which had remained undiscovered until recently, is accompanied by an analysis that outlines its philological and socio-historical value, how it evidences the development of a strong bond of friendship and also serves as a reflection of the culturo-philosophical nature of the Aragonese politician.
