Relations between the Valencian Generalitat and the regular clergy experienced strong tensions in the 17th century. They arose because of the tax exemption of the ecclesiastics, especially the mendicant orders. From an analysis of these conflicts we consider the practical reality of a little-known tax privilege, in terms of its incidence and derivations.
