En una playa de Barcelona. Historiografía y novela de caballerías en la Cataluña del siglo XVII

Centuria (Barcelona: Cormellas, 1600), by Franciscan Esteve de Barelles, is a work completely forgotten and without previous case studies, because it was considered extravagant and absurd. In this study we view the novel as one of chivalry and, at the same time, contextualize it within Catalan history, as Barelles intended. We also analyze the work from theological approaches which support and define its transcendent intention to insist on a return to a pristine stratified order Barelles thought lost. Finally, we analyze the story of Count Salomon —an episode that takes in the Catalan historiographical tradition— to see how Barelles turns it into a chivalrous history, which would be the source for Quixote’s duel with the Knight of the White Moon on the beach of Barcelona.Downloads
