La rivolta napoletana del 1647. Il ruolo delle autorità cittadine nella fi ne di Masaniello
Keywords:
Masaniello, Naples, revolt of 1647, conspiracy, folly.Abstract
According to some chroniclers, the tragic death of Masaniello failed to bring real advantages to the Neapolitans. Undoubtedly, it sowed panic and rapidly seemed a confi rmation for sceptics, inside and outside the peninsula. If Ma- saniello, after his reconciliation with the viceroy, the Duke of Arcos, enter-tained for a few hours the dream of becoming a trustworthy servant to the Duke and of receiving in exchange valuable protection, some documents lead us to see a much more complex story of his last days. Th is article provides a more detailed account of those circumstances than that given by the author in her recent biography of the famed fishmonger.
