The attempt of the province of Guipúzcoa to secede from the Spanish Crown during the French Revolutionary wars (1793-1795) was an aff air in which a number of Franco-Basque and Bearnais merchants, long-time residents in San Sebastián, were involved. Historians have tended to fi nd ideological and political reasons for this behaviour. However, other factors, such as business and family attachments, were to be found and, in fact, were of greater importance. The aim of this article is to study the nature of these factors.
