Abstract

Th e article studies in detail the latest part of the war between France and Spain, developing from 1648 to 1659. If a preliminary agreement for peace, reached in the favourable climate of the Peace of Westphalia, failed to materialize, major progresses to the same end by 1656 did not succeed either. The author traces the political and military developments between both dates and then on until 1659, as they were infl uenced by, on the one hand, the outbreak of the Catalan and Portuguese revolts and of the Frondes, and, on the other one, by the changing Spanish infl uence over Alsace and Lorraine and by the military fortunes in a variety of theatres, from Italy to the Rhin corridor and the Franco-Flemish frontier. In doing so, he off ers a new assessment of Spanish and French negotiating policies, as seen in the attitudes of the major offi cials in both sides and according to their respective goals. And he concludes that by 1660 it was France the one which had clearly succeeded.
