In the process of forming new corps of the Royal Guards, at the initiative of his minister José Patiño, Philip V created in 1731 the Horseback Company of Royal Grenadiers, that would remain active until the Ensenada military reform of 1749. Conceived as an elit unit, it enjoyed numerous privileges in relation to all the other corps and, from the onset, its officers were members of the Catalan nobility which had openly declared itself in favour of the Bourbon cause during the first years of the War of Spanish Succession. Bound among them by the peculiar family relations and patronage practices established at the creation of the company by its first lieutenant-captain, Bernardino Marimón, its officers developed a clear strategy of political and social promotion throughout the century.Downloads
