Lectores y libros en tiempos del Quijote
Keywords:
distribution, books, readers, seventeenth century.Abstract
The analysis of book distribution is methodologically difficult, especially when the work in question is Don Quixote. In this article, the circumstances and context of Don Quixote’s publication and distribution are studied. Some of the many aspects examined are the level of literacy at the beginning of the seventeenth century and potential clients for the text, the state of printing activity in the Peninsula, the market for books and printing press products, the existence of books in homes, and the invisible mechanisms of distribution. Given this rather extraordinarily negative framework in which Don Quixote commences, the observations in the article shed light to what is ultimately the story of a survivor.Downloads
