Abstract

The coded correspondence between King Ferdinand the Catholic and the ambassador Joan Escrivà de Romaní i Ram. This article illustrates the deciphering of the coded correspondence between King Ferdinand the Catholic and Joan Escrivà de Romaní i Ram, Spanish ambassador in Naples. This as the result of a process of cryptoanalysis that has been applied to ten cryptograms preserved in the Sástago collection that is actually stored in the archives of the Crown of Aragon.

The procedure applied to the deciphering has been articulated in three fases: the description of the cryptographic system used, that is called “tablas cifradoras” method, description of the methodology at the base of the deciphering and the integral ediction of the texts. The article includes a brief historical introduction and the state of the studies about cryptography in the time of the Catholics kings.
