Mars and Venus: Warfare and international relations of the Casa de Austria
This paper offers a general view of the international relations between the end of the 15th century and the Peace of Westphalia. In this time, marked by the hegemony of the House of Habsburg, the prevailing criterion in the international field is dynastic politics, a policy meant to form composite monarchies by means of the integration of new territories. Wars fought from this conception are conceptually different to the "total war" waged on the Amerindians and the followers of Islam. The spread of Calvinism marks the beginning of a new stage in Europe, a stage when war intensifies. The conflicts caused will prove unsolvable in purely dynastic or religious terms and the new doctrines on international law will facilitate the Peace of 1648.
