The Future of Catalonia: a "sujet brûlant" at the Münster Negotiations
After summarizing the situation of Catalonia on the European arena from 1640 to 1643, the author offers an outlook over the way of developing the complex and hard negotiations on the future of Catalonia between 1643 and 1648 in the European Congress of Peace of Münster (Westphalia). He takes stock of both the continuities observed and the attitudes and stands taken in the different stages of the talks, according to the variable condition of the war within and out of Catalonia. Since the future of Catalonia would be shaped or at least conditioned by the Peace of the Pyrenees (1659), the author deals also briefly, by way of epilogue, with the decade after 1648 until this Peace, to explain the outcome of the Franco-Spanish conflict which provides the setting of this issue.
