«Como en espejo». Science of government and justice in the Tractado de República by Alonso de Castrillo
Alonso de Castrillo’s Tractado de República is undoubtedly one of the main texts within the humanistic tradition of political thought in Spanish. Written in 1520 and published shortly before the defeat of the comuneros in Villalar, the treaty – due to its mediating and pacifying attitude – has lent itself to interpretations of different and even opposing meanings. Positioned halfway between the scholastic tradition and purely humanistic motifs, and as a work of political education aimed at the laity, Castrillo’s treatise deserves to be re-visited with scrupulous attention paid to the original text and its sources, among which Repetitio de iustitia et iniustitia by Fernando de Roa stands out.
