Aspirations, adventures, and misfortunes of Pier Giovanni Capece Galeota, ambassador of the City of Naples to Madrid (1597-1644)
The embassies from the city of Naples to Madrid, as well as those from other cities and kingdoms of the Spanish Monarchy throughout the Early Modern period, were representative practices that provided subjects with the opportunity to present themselves «a sus reales pies» to protect or expand ancient
prerogatives or negotiate new privileges. This essay reconstructs the profile and embassy of Pier Giovanni Capece Galeota (1597-1644), a protagonist of a pretty unknown affair which serves as an exemplary testimony of the difficulties and risks involved in an embassy and the repercussions that the envoys of the city could suffer at the end of their mission in Madrid.
