El potencial del arte basado en datos para la creación y revitalización de los espacios públicos

Resumen

El arte basado en datos (data art)  es una nueva forma innovadora de arte digital cuya presencia está aumentando en el datascape de las ciudades. Los datos, utilizados como medio artístico, proporcionan una relación especial con el tiempo y el espacio al conectar el contexto de la generación de datos con el de su exposición. El componente virtual del arte basado en datos abre un espacio aumentado, donde se cruzan las diferentes dimensiones de los datos. Este ensayo analiza cómo esta nueva forma de arte puede contribuir al placemaking creativo y digital de una ciudad. En otras palabras, cómo el data art puede contribuir a la creación y revitalización de sus espacios públicos, ofreciendo nuevos relatos a través de una experiencia sensorial particular. Tres estudios de caso apoyan el análisis. “Living connections”, proyectado en un puente emblemático en Montreal, contribuye a un tipo de placemaking espectacular. "Interconnected", una escultura de datos en el aeropuerto internacional de Charlotte, está relacionado con el placemaking de infraestructura. Finalmente, "Herald/Harbinger" conecta la sociedad industrializada con la naturaleza a través de una conexión global. Los resultados participan en la reflexión sobre la naturaleza y la especificidad del arte basado en datos, así como en destacar el potencial del data art por la transformación del espacio público al establecer una relación específica con el tiempo, el lugar y las personas.
