THE LATIN MANUSCRIPTS OF THE SIETE PARTIDAS AND THE GLOSSATED EDITION OF DÍAZ DE MONTALVO

Abstract

The best-known piece of legal work of Alfonso X’s manuscript production, the Siete Partidas, had a long living history that spanned from the Late Middle Ages to the early twentieth century. It was known and widely used in other kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and, therefore, was also translated into other languages, including Latin. The present article will jointly analyse two of the Latin manuscripts of the Siete Partidas, reaching the conclusion that one of them transmits a Latin translation which was copied by Diego Fernández in Seville in 1420 for Rodrigo García. The Latin translation of the Sevillian manuscript remained unknown to scholarly research until now and has not been the subject of study within the Alphonsine historiography. This article also raises the possibility that Díaz de Montalvo used the Latin text of the manuscripts in his glossed edition published in 1501, given the textual connections between this edition and the Latin manuscripts.
