The teaching of Spanish in regions of the Spanish State where this language was not the native one became an issue that marked the demands of teachers from Catalonia during the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. According to the legislation, the aim was to provide schooling in the official language, Spanish, of which students had no knowledge. Taking into consideration three series of articles that were published in the press in the first decades of the 20th century, entitled “Llengua y ensenyansa” (1903), “La llengua docent a les escoles de Catalunya” (1917) and “El plet lingüístic a les nostres escoles” (1918), light will be shed on Salvador Genis’ approach to the role of Catalan and Spanish in the schools of Catalonia, as well as his proposal to ease the teaching of the latter.
