Abstract

The idea that Spanish-speakers have of the Diccionario de la lengua española of the Royal Spanish Academy comes from the media. Consideration of the Academy as the organization responsible for regulating and codifying Spanish and of its Dictionary as the only valid reference work for the language is neither the result of chance, nor of the educational establishment, but of the diffusion and dissemination it receives particularly through the press. The press has also channelled observations concerning the dictionary, the words it includes and the way in which it does so. This article thus addresses how the Dictionary is received in the media, the construction of the idea of the Dictionary that stems from it, how the Academy disseminates and circulates its work and how it finds in the media a suitable conduit for positioning itself as the governing body of Spanish throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
