El llenguado [The sole] is a TV program about the Catalan language created by the Department of New Formats of TV3 and broadcast by this channel between January 15 and March 25, 2020. Although it was recorded just after the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) completed the updating of the orthographic and grammatical regulations of the Catalan language, El llenguado is not conceived as a space for disseminating linguistic regulations. With a format typical of entertainment programs, it seeks to promote the social extension of Catalan, in a context of concern about the results of surveys on language uses of the population developed by the Statistical Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) and the Directorate-General for Language Policy of the Government of Catalonia. In order to achieve the goal of making the population lose the fear of speaking Catalan regardless of the level of knowledge that each one has of it, this TV program adopts a “desolemnizing attitude” in the treatment of the language.
