This paper puts forward an interpretation of «Maîtresse de poëte», one of Gabriel Ferrater’s most hermetic poems. The use of pronouns, temporal references, syntax and the quotation that ends it require the reader to make a hermeneutic effort that demonstrates the complexity that Ferrater’s poetry can reach. In «Maîtresse de poëte», the poet constructs the splitting of a lyrical voice that articulates the rationalization of a past experience. The result formalizes a critique of the inevitable division that every poem provokes in relation to the poetized experience, i.e., real life. To this critical element of Ferrater’s poetry, inseparable from a concern regarding the specificity of every single experience, I dedicate, by way of a general introduction, the part of the article that precedes the interpretation of the poem.
