Abstract

This article deals with German colonial history in both Africa and Brazil. German colonialism was characterized by ruthless exploitation and oppression of the indigenous population. Coming to terms with this past has developed in different ways in both regions. In Africa in particular, coming to terms with the colonial era has gained in importance in recent decades and takes place primarily in political and academic discourses. Numerous authors have dealt with the past in their works and thus made an important contribution to the social debate. An example of this is the novel Morenga by the German writer Uwe Timm. Literature helps to raise awareness of the responsibility of Germany and other colonial powers for the consequences of colonialism.
