Abstract

Pregnancy may alter the emotional balance of the mother-to-be and lead to negative emotional states such as fear and anxiety.

This fear and anxiety, closely related to the expectations of pain, are frequent pregnant women soon to give birth. They are associated with concerns about their health and the health of their child.

The purpose of this study was to analyse how anxiety and fear influence the perception and tolerance of pain in childbirth in a group of pregnant women at a public hospital in Tarragona.

Objective:

To determine how negative emotional states such as anxiety and fear influence the perceptions and tolerance of pain in childbirth in pregnant women at a public hospital in Tarragona.

Methodology:

Descriptive, analytical, prospective study. The sample comprised pregnant women at a public hospital in Tarragona who completed questionnaires during pregnancy and postpartum. Demographic and clinical data were compiled, and pain, anxiety and fear were measured.

Results:

The intensity of pain perceived by women was high, although no direct relationship was established between the overall level of anxiety and the perception of pain in childbirth. Women with higher levels of anxiety expressed a greater fear of pain in childbirth, and consequently a poorer assessment of the pain relief received.

Conclusions:

Identifying the concerns and fears of women before childbirth can allow the midwife to adapt the emotional care provided to each case and is likely improve the experience of pain during childbirth.
