Introduction
The induction of lactation enables women who have not given birth to breastfeed their child in cases of adoption, surrogacy or lesbian couples. There are pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods for inducing lactation.
Objective
To identify non-pharmacological methods for inducing lactation.
Material and Methods
A literature search of the Pubmed, Cinahl and Web of Science databases was carried out in October 2015. A total of fifteen papers were found on inducing lactation.
Results
There are a few cases of inducing lactation in which only non-pharmacological methods are used, but stimulation is essential in all cases. There is no standard guide on methods for this process. Each case of induction is carried out in a different way, and it is difficult to make comparisons.
Conclusions
More studies are required on non-pharmacological methods for inducing breastfeeding. This will help to standardise the care provided to mothers who decide to go through this process, considering each case individually.
