Abstract

Subject: This article provides an overview of the proceedings of the Symposium on Assessment and Feedback in Clinical Legal Education held at Northumbria University on 9th January 2009. The symposium was organised by the Clinical Legal Education Organization (CLEO) and focused on the current approaches to clinical assessment and feedback together with common problems and solutions. Method: Analysis of different legal clinic experiences and the array of approaches to feedback and assessment implemented in them. Conclusions: The proceedings reveal that there is a significant degree of mutual recognition of the potential problems with clinical assessment and commonality of approach to resolving these problems. There is also a high degree of consensus that, despite the uncertainties and difficulties, transparent, rigorous and fair assessment of clinical experience is achievable.
