Painting the world, meaning the life. The aesthetics of Tukano people as a political ontology
The Siekopaai are one of the 14 indigenous nationalities recognized by the Ecuadorian State. They inhabit the Amazon region on the northern border between Ecuador and Peru and belong to the Western Tukano language group. In their negotiations with the state administration they try to have their ancestral territory recognized, since it has been reduced and usurped in different stages and from multiple interests (oil exploitation, agroindustry, conservationism). In these claims the Siekopaai are dressed in their cushmas, face paint, ritual crowns, etc., showing a shamanic worldview hardly understandable to officials. The purpose of this article is to show that the aesthetics of the Siekopaai is an index of a political ontology, in which the bio-social relations of the Amazon rainforest constitute the continuum nature-society.
