Dignidad Rebelde: Art and Activism Using Xicanisma and Zapatismo Ideologies

The following article analyzes the artwork and activism of Dignidad Rebelde, a graphic arts collaboration by Jesus Barraza and Melanie Cervantes who view art as “an empowering reflection of community struggles, dreams and visions.” Using Xicanisma and Zapatismo, these artists create art amplifying people’s stories and that “can be put back into the hands of the communities who inspire it.” Barraza and Cervantes state their work is “grounded in Third World and indigenous movements,” serves to counter and render visible the histories of colonialism, genocide and exploitation. An analysis of art pieces and projects by Dignidad Rebelde include utilization of space and place, as well as subject matter as influenced by indigenous ways of knowing.
Dignidad Rebelde: Arte y Activismo Utilizando Xicanisma y Ideologías Zapatistas
El siguiente artículo analiza la producción artística y el activismo de Dignidad Rebelde, una colaboración en el campo de las artes gráficas de Jesús Barraza y Melanie Cervantes, quienes ven el arte como “un reflejo empoderador de las luchas, sueños y visiones de la comunidad”. Utilizando Xicanisma y Zapatismo, estos artistas crean obras de arte que amplifican las historias de las personas y estas "se puede volver a poner en manos de las comunidades que las inspiran". Barraza y Cervantes afirman que su trabajo “se basa en movimientos indígenas y del Tercer Mundo”, sirve para contrarrestar y visibilizar las historias de colonialismo, genocidio y explotación. El análisis de obras de arte y proyectos de Dignidad Rebelde incluye la utilización del espacio y el lugar, así como el tema según la influencia de las formas indígenas de conocimiento.
