Abstract

This paper presents an online service-learning experience aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in a population of children and young people treated at their health centre due to a diagnosis of overweight, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles, among others. The experience was developed in the context of the course Basic Sciences for Nursing 2 of the Nursing course at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción, by applying the service-learning methodology. The aim of the experience was for the students, together with the children and youth community of the Elige Vida Sana (Choose Healthy Living) Programme, to effectively reinforce healthy lifestyles and to associate them from an early age with disease prevention so that they can be part of a generation that values self-care and maintains a healthy lifestyle. The students developed ten participatory virtual educational workshops with the children and youth population of the Elige Vida Sana Programme on topics related to healthy lifestyles to support and complement the activities developed in the physical activity workshops during the COVID-19 pandemic confinement. The experience allowed the reinforcement of behaviour, knowledge, and habits, intending to generate changes in the youngest users of the family health centre as well as encouraged social commitment in the nursing students.
