This paper draws on a wide variety of documents but especially upon census data to analyse patterns of politics, trade unionism and daily life among Barcelona’s working class. Precarious working and living conditions in the city coupled with severely constrained social mobility, compared to that of working classes elsewhere, help explain the higher than normal prevalence of revolutionary activity across the strata of unskilled workers who had migrated to the capital from outside Catalonia.Downloads
