The Francoist Interpretation of Joan Maragall
Keywords:
Spain, Francoism, intellectuals, Joan Maragall, Generation of ’98Abstract
This article explains the inclusion of Catalan writer Joan Maragall in the Francoist discourse by means of his collaboration with the so-called Generation of ’98. Writing in Catalan and Spanish, Maragall symbolised for Francoism the critical dialogue between Catalonia and Castile through his correspondence with Miguel deUnamuno. This paper begins at the centenary of his birth, in 1960, a time when Francoism glorified orobscured the writer’s work to suit its purposes. Its basic concept was to demonstrate that Maragall was a Catalan writer but, above all, a Spanish one.
