Josep Pla, between Literature and Politics at the End of Francoism

With the creation of the Award of Honour of Catalan Literature, theCatalan cultural and literary world experienced a recurring controversy about whether the writer Josep Pla was deserving of the award or not. Different opinions evaluated not the literary merits of the Pla, but considerations about the use of the Catalan language by writers and the implications of these for the survival of Catalan culture itself. This article examines this issue and also addresses the important role of the magazine Destino in these events.
