Taking for analysis the case of contemporary Portugal (and especially the historiographical treatment of Portugal under Salazar), this article aims to: a) assess the theoretical mobilization of the two concepts of dictatorship and democracy; b) discuss their use in terms of a logic of continuity and rupture; c) produce a critical understanding of the concept of political transition
