Abstract

The Institut d’Educació General (1914) was created as an autonomous entity of hygienic, civic and moral training for adults and was founded by Enric Prat de la Riba. In May 1918, Eugeni d’Ors, general director of state education of the Mancomunitat, became the new director and he proposed the designation of a General Education Commission which wasn’t created until one year later. In 1920 Jaume Bofill i Mates replaced Eugeni d’Ors in leading the Commission and two more members were elected. Amongst the Commission programmes it is worth mentioning the public conferences: between 1921 and 1923, 203 were held in 76 different locations in front of a total of 71.120 people. Only seven of those conferences were held in Barcelona. The Institut d’Educació General followed the model of the Society of Popular Conferences of France and of its British university extension. It was half way between the old economic society of friends model, originally from the XIX century, and the future Comissariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat during the civil war years from 1936 to 1939.
