This article analyzes the epistolary relationship between Joan
Solé i Pla and Josep Subirà Puig, two family members who, from Barcelona
and Madrid, made a commitment to the material help and promotion
of Spanish and Catalan volunteers in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion
during the First World War. Through their correspondence we seek
to analyze the disputed national projections of the discourses on volunteers,
and verify the scarcely-studied issue of the important coverage and
organization of propaganda on volunteers impelled by Josep Subirà, who,
despite everything, maintained a close relationship with Solé i Pla marked
by family cordiality and enthusiasm for their mutual alliadophile activities.
