Abstract

The publication of Victor Balaguer’s Historia de Cataluña y la Corona de Aragón (1859) was the culmination of an ideological, political and cultural project that started at the beginning of the 1850s. One of the milestones in this project was the publication of El Conceller, a journal where a Romantic interpretation of Catalan history, literature and identity constructed an effective discourse for rebuilding the liberal party, in favour of the ideals of modernity, and against conservative moderantismo
