Enric Ucelay-Da Cal presents Vìctor Balaguer as a key Romantic historian, who established the canon of Catalan National History. Given the obsessive historicism of Catalan nationalism, this implicitly makes him a major figure in its logical construction. Ucelay-Da Cal situates Balaguer in the stream of nineteenth-century historical culture in Europe and the Americas, and presents a broad-based interpretation of Balaguer’s role as a historian by comparison to general historiografic trends and to political developments.Downloads
