This issue of Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History features discussions and presentations by specialists in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan at a seminar held in Barcelona in March 2010 under the title "The Great Confrontation between Democracy and Dictatorship." The seminar served as a meeting place where researchers from seven different European universities were able to explore one of our key issues of recent times: the role of intellectuals in times of tension between democratic and totalitarian options.
