At the beginning of the 20th century, most of the fish caught along the Catalan coast was sent to the city of Barcelona. Improvements in means of transport and progress in conservation systems, as well as the evolution of fishing techniques in eastern Spain, facilitated the marketing of fresh fish towards the Catalan capital. At the same time, this concentration of fishing directly favoured the intermediaries established in the city, who speculated on the price of the fish according to the time of arrival and the volume of the catches.
