Abstract

Witches and the neighborhood. Two judicial trials in Bescaran, Alt Urgell, 1551-1553

This article analyzes two trials for witchcraft brought by those in charge of criminal justice for the Cathedral of Santa Maria d’Urgell against two women of Bescaran, a village in the Alt Urgell, in the years 1551-1553. These two defendants would join at least 13 to 15 other bescaranesas —women from Bescaran— judged by the same court and by the criminal court shared with the Ciutat d’Urgell, between 1520-1530 and 1623. These events confirm the remarkable persecution of witches in the mountainous areas of the bishopric of Urgell (Pallars, Andorra and Alt Urgell) between the 15th century and the beginning of the 17th century. Our research will allow us to analyze the community values, interpersonal relationships and beliefs associated with the witchcraft of the inhabitants of this town, who were both victims and instigators of this repression.
