Focusing on Philip IV of Spain, this paper seeks to analyse the role and importance that honour and reputation had in the conceptualization of the policies of the Spanish monarchy, within the framework of its actions in 17th-century Europe. Regarding the actions of individuals, inside the historical structures of anera, as without any doubt significant, the question arises of how the perceptions, ideas and whole mindset of individuals has to be considered as equally important for the historical evolution. The example of Philip IV can show us, firstly, how the worldview and mindset of an individual could lead to actions which had, voluntarily or involuntarily, an undeniable influence on the policies of the Spanish monarchy in their relations with other European powers, and secondly, that the concepts of reputation and honour should not be forgotten when analysing and evaluating historical events and political actions of the Early Modern Era.
