Abstract

The American writings of the chronicler of the Indies, Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo Valdés (1478-1557), and particularly the Sumario (1526), were written in response to the expectations and concerns of 16th century Italian humanism. The links between “il signor Oviedo” and the Italian humanist models are key to understanding the cultural exchanges between Fernández de Oviedo and the intellectual elites with which he came into contact in 16th century Italy and Spain. The case of the ambassador of the Republic of Venice, Andrea Navagero (1483-1529), helps us understand that the ideological, cultural and aristocratic values of those intellectual elites conditioned the writing of a particular kind of imperial narrative over which new categories —social and natural— were to be built.
