Abstract

This article studies the uneasy relations between the offi cers of the Governació of Valencia and the diputats of the General (the permanent committee of its Corts or Parliament) during the 1490s, in Ferdinand the Catholic’s reign. In 1487 and 1488, the king took a hand in appointing diputats and fi nancial officials of the noble estate in the Diputació of Valencia, as well as in those of Catalonia and Aragon. A sort of settlement was not reached until the implementation of the insaculación or lottery system for the offi ces of the said three institutions. During this parenthesis, Valencia underwent frequent tensions related to both civil and criminal jurisdiction, including juridical, administrative and even violent acts. Th is was a struggle for power between the royal Governació and the Diputació del General, a struggle that reached out to Catalonia as well. Besides the political issue, there were also economic interests, having to do with taxes and the refusal to pay them, as was the case of the town of Les Barraques dels Reials. Th e document published as an appendix clearly shows this.
