Abstract

objective. To analyze the opinion, attitude, and level of knowledge of obstetrics and childcare students from a public university regarding the Voluntary Termination of Pregnancy (VTP) Law. material and method. Three hundred and eight (308) Obstetrics and Childcare students from the University of Antofagasta were asked for their opinion and knowledge regarding the recently implemented VTP Law in Chile. Data were collected in a self-applied questionnaire and processed in an Excel spreadsheet. The ethical safeguard was performed through an informed consent form. results. From 235 surveys received, the following could be deduced: In relation to level of knowledge on the VTP Law, all of the participants knew that abortion is legal in Chile only in three circumstances as defined by law and they could identify them correctly. Eighteen (18) percent of the surveyed students believe that the subjects included in the syllabus gave them sufficient information regarding the VTP Law, while sixty-six (66) percent pointed out they were informed by the press. In relation to the opinion and attitude towards abortion, fourty-two (42) percent declared themselves absolutely in favor of it. Ninety-one (91) percent of respondents believe that the VTP Law is a breakthrough for public policies in Chile. conclusions. Surveyed students show a favorable attitude towards the termination of pregnancy when one of the three circumstances have occurred. Although there are potential objectors to certain circumstances, most students have a favorable attitude towards what they consider a breakthrough for public policies in the country.
