Abstract

This study analyzes the important but until now largely unrecognized role of the Catalan community of Montevideo in the economic social and institutional development of Uruguay during its colonial period (1724-1808) and in the first phase (1808- 1814) of the struggles between American-born Europeans and Peninsular Spaniards for control of the territories bordering the Plata River.
