    The 19th issue of Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History focuses on the Catalan writer Victor Balaguer, reproducing papers presented at the international conference "History, politics, literature: A hundred and fifty years of History of Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon by Víctor Balaguer." The conference took place on 24 and 25 October 2014 at the Víctor Balaguer Library Museum (Vilanova i la Geltrú) and the Ateneu Barcelonès (Barcelona). The importance of Víctor Balaguer’s life and work was the focus of various specialists in literature and history whose papers have been transcribed and edited here for readers.

    This issue of Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History is the result of a research seminar held in November 2013 by GEHCI in order to analyze the interrelationships between migration, cultural change and the notion of citizenship in contemporary Catalonia (1920-1980). The articles, which focus on fields as varied as history, sociology, anthropology, philology and urban planning, are written by renowned specialists such as José Luis Oyon, Albert Balcells, Dasca Maria Clara Carme and Antoni Parramon Marimon. The issue also includes works by young researchers who approach different aspects of history and explore leading figures like Joan Maragall and Manuel Vázquez Montalbán from new perspectives.

    In this issue, the section ”Temes” opens with a reflection on the role of historical research and the historian in the contemporary period, and continues with studies on the Catalan community in Montevideo between the end of the eighteenth century and the early nineteenth century; the role of intellectuals in public service in the Generalitat of Catalonia during the Second Republic; the contribution of Joan Estelrich to the construction of a humanistic discourse in the thirties, and the role of cinema in the dissemination of a distinct Valencian identity. In the section "Monographs and Research" there are contributions on the figures of President Sunyol and Nicolau d'Olwer. The issue concludes with a section on the Almirall Project, which analyzes the presence of Romantic literature in the Ateneu Barcelonès Library.

    This issue of Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History offers the conclusions of specialists from seven universities who came together in December 2011 for a seminar on intellectuals and the challenges of the nineteen-sixties, entitled "Els intel·lectuals davant els reptes dels anys seixanta". The issue also contains three additional texts on other major aspects of the same subject and an article addressing the collaboration of Cercles with the Almirall Project, whose objective is to study the reception of ideas in Catalonia at the end of the 19th century through the analysis of the catalogue of the Ateneu Barcelonès Library.

In addition, we have introduced formal improvements to enable Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History to improve its international ranking and stand firm as a landmark in cultural and intellectual history.

    This issue of Cercles. A Journal of Cultural History features discussions and presentations by specialists in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Catalan at a seminar held in Barcelona in March 2010 under the title "The Great Confrontation between Democracy and Dictatorship." The seminar served as a meeting place where researchers from seven different European universities were able to explore one of our key issues of recent times: the role of intellectuals in times of tension between democratic and totalitarian options.

Our cultural history is closely connected to political, social, institutional and intellectual history, all fields of study in which priority has been given to the ways by which individuals and groups understand and explain themselves, along with their relations to the rest of society and the general historical dynamic.

    The current research task of the Intellectual and Cultural History Group (GEHCI) focuses on cultural agents, mainly in the Catalan-speaking area. In this issue we want to open up this framework to the remaining Mediterranean and European countries. We seek to offer a broad and comprehensive view of the phenomenon, analyzing the importance of different cultural means and the intervention of intellectuals in the creation of networks and spaces of sociability, from elites to the consolidation of different political cultures.
