Carmen Laforet and Elena Fortún began writing to each other in 1947 when Laforet, living in Madrid, sent a letter to her "literary mother", who was exiled in Buenos Aires at the time. They kept in touch after Fortún returned to Spain and settled in Barcelona, which provided both women with an outlet to exchange books and readings. Despite Elena Fortún’s hospitalization in 1951, their correspondence, which had become increasingly spiritual in nature, did not stop until a few weeks before her death the following year.
