From the second half of the 20th century onwards, Lluc magazine became a reflective, critical and cultural platform on sociolinguistics in Majorca. The period of study covered here runs from January 1968 the start date for a new period using the term Països Catalans to 1999. The publication’s ideology focuses on the socialisation of positive language attitudes to Catalan language and culture, with a favourable narrative concerning the differential function of Catalan. This article adopts a sociolinguistic approach in analysing the discourses in the opinion articles by prominent intellectuals and, fundamentally, the editorials in Lluc, based around the linguistic functions of society and the social functions of Catalan in the Balearic Islands. The study is divided into two parts: one, on the opinions regarding the status of the language and its presence in the field of education, mass media and the Church; and the other, regarding corpus and diatopic variation applied to the standard, in accordance with the teachings of Francesc de B. Moll.
