This article provides details of the research that has been used to determine the characteristics that discussion forums in e-learning should have when active methodologies such as cooperative learning or task-based approaches are to be used. On one hand, it describes the theoretical foundations that underpinned the design of the training course. On the other hand, it presents the learning outcomes obtained after its experimentation. The conclusions highlight how forums become an essential tool for cooperative learning, as well as for motivation, as they facilitate exchange and discussion in a context where asynchrony can lead to feelings of loneliness and individuality.
