Abstract

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) studied human language, and, more specifically, nouns, from a philosophical perspective. Hobbes considers nouns to be concept assigners: proper nouns assign one single thing, whereas common nouns assign several things. These ideas became object of philosophical reflections and had a great influence on other philosophers, such as John Stuart Mill.
