Abstract

The re-elaboration of foreign sources, together with epistolarity and literary narration, are probably the most influential textual practices when it comes to the shaping of Spanish journalistic discourse in its origins. Such discourse has shown a high degree of heterogeneity in all its subsequent developments that we plan to discuss from the perspective of Coseriu-inspired historical linguistics. On this occasion, the emphasis will be placed on the first element through a selection of texts translated from French in the «Foreign News» sections of the most important Spanish newspapers published during the 1830s and 1840s. That is a time when diachronic studies on the Spanish language and press respectively coincide in placing the climax of the period known as first modern Spanish and the transition towards a stage of maturity in journalism which likewise permits to discern direct connections to current affairs without a complete identity existing yet. Considering the translated texts and their originals as well the state of the language reflected by the former will allow us to anticipate the results of a discourse analysis that will lay the foundations for the exploration of the direct influence exerted by texts in French language within a broader time frame (1675-1850).
